Waymo, formerly the Google self-driving car project, is now allowing the general public to ride WITHOUT a backup driver.
Each vehicle is able to service around 50 square miles. The kicker is that NO ONE will be in the car or watching remotely to take over in an emergency. Check out this video of an autonomous ride in Phoenix, AZ.
While I know the technology is advancing... I'd probably still be uneasy just sitting there. Seems like it could cool experience though.
