National Purple Heart Day: History of the Purple Heart

August 7th is Purple Heart Day.Today, we honor the brave men and women who were either wounded in battle or paid the ultimate price for our freedom in combat.

The Purple Heart is the oldest American military decoration still given to U.S military members.It was originally called the Badge of Merit when General George Washington created it on August 7th, 1782.
