USMC decorated fighter pilot, WWII & Korea, Colonel John Glenn was also a member of the Mercury 7, the USA's 1st astronauts. Today in 1962, he orbited the earth 3 times in just under 5 hours, alone, in a Friendship 7 Mercury capsule. John Glenn carried a note with him on board the spaceship flight: "I am a stranger. I come in peace." John Glenn, a true American Hero, died in 2016 at 95 years of age.
