When Napoleon invaded Egypt in the late 1700's, there was no alcohol for the soldiers to drink, as Egypt is an Islamic country and alcohol is banned. However, Egyptians smoke hashish, which the French soldiers LOVED. So much so that French officers, noticing their soldiers were stoned out of their minds most of the day and night from smoking Egyptian hash, banned hashish smoking by the troops.
