If you've been following this story, you know that the estate of now deceased Spirit vocalist and songwriter Randy California has been trying to get money from Led Zeppelin because they allege Zeppelin stole parts of the Spirit song "Taurus" to create "Stairway to Heaven." They've lost at every level of the courts so far, including most recently, the 9th circuit court of appeals, who agreed with a lower court ruling of no copyright infringement. One thing complicating the Spirit case is that sound recordings in general were not protected at the time the Spirit song was written....Randy California's lawyer Michael Skidmore has now petitioned the Supreme Court, arguing, among other things, that most copyright cases involving songs are based on examining sheet music, which isn't fair to many artists.
