John Banaszak won three Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Before he wore the Black and Gold, he served a two-year stint in the U.S. Marines.
After football, he was part of the Recreation Department in Peters Township, where Banaszak was my youngest sister Mindy's softball coach. He even shares a birthday with her!
He then moved onto college football coaching locally, first with Washington & Jefferson. After serving as an assistant coach at Robert Morris University for 11 seasons, he was promoted to head coach in 2014, where he still coaches today.
Last Tuesday, Banaszak was one of four athletes inducted into the Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame, along with Washington Nationals manager (and former MLB player) Dusty Baker, NFL Hall of Famer Clifford Battles and former light heavyweight boxing champion Tommy Loughran.
Just 45 people have been inducted into the USMC Sports Hall of Fame since its inception in 2001, including Roberto Clemente.
