Upon his death, Indy Colts owner Jim Irsay wanted the pieces in his massive collection of rock guitars to be auctioned off to private citizens who wanted to own one and play it. Irsay passed away last year at age 65, and this past Thursday at Christie's Auction House in New York, David Gilmour's Black Fender Stratocaster sold for a whopping 14.5 million dollars, shattering the former record holder, Kurt Cobain's guitar from MTV's "Unplugged," which sold for $6 million in 2020. Also selling for huge money: Jerry Garcia's Tiger for $11.5 million, and Kurt Cobain's Fender Mustang that he played while recording "Smells Like Tee Spirit, for $6.9 million. It was Irsay's wish that the proceeds from the auction go to the environmental protection group ClientEarth. Here's more on Irsay and last week's action, including the highlights of guitars sold: https://ultimateclassicrock.com/david-gilmour-guitar-smashes-auction-record-selling-for-14-5-million/
