Don Henley hates the way he sang one of the biggest Eagles hits ever, and doesn't listen to it. In a a recent interview, Henley set the scene for how the song "Desperado" came together: he had started the song in the late 1960's, and modeled it after the Steven Foster (great American songwriter of the 19th century) songs his grandmother sang from her rocking chair. He and Glenn Frey got together in a Southern California cabin, Henley played what he had for Frey--Frey sat at an old piano and began fleshing out and arranging it into "Desperado". It's the first songwriting collaboration the duo had. Henley says he doesn't listen to the song because he's dissatisfied with his singing on it: "I think I got to do about 4 takes, maybe 5, and I still have a little trouble with the intonation on the lead vocal to this day. I don't listen to it." He adds he was intimidated because the entire London Symphony Orchestra was there to record the musical accompaniment, and they looked "bored silly" when they weren't playing.
