Daryl Hall Hates Being Called "Yacht Rock"

In a recent podcast, Singer/musician Daryl Hall made no secret of how pissed he is that people lump his music with Hall & Oates in the "Yacht Rock" genre, referring to the smooth, glossy soft rock sound of many pop bands in the 1970's and '80's. The term took hold from an internet comedy series that started in 2005: Hall refers to its genesis as "a f-ing joke by two jerk offs in California, and suddenly it became a genre." He defends his Philadelphia-based sound as "mellow R&B. Smooth R&B," and adds that people in general "always come up with all this kind of crap, soft rock and yacht rock and all this other nonsense."
