Rock Hits That Were Initially Misses

You may not know that some of your favorite rock tunes were duds when they were first released...David Bowie's "Space Oddity" was originally released immediately after the Apollo 11 moon landing, and did nothing on the charts back in 1969, but after its re-release 3 years later, it peaked close to the top of the charts...Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again" became a hit in 1987 after flopping in its initial release in 1982--the band changed record labels, and the head of the label convinced singer David Coverdale to re-release it. Same deal with Hall and Oates's "She's Gone"--a new record label, and a re-release took the song to #7 on the charts....Derek and the Dominos' "Layla" was cut down from 7 minutes to less than 3 minutes to get played on radio stations, and flopped. One year later, they released the uncut version, and it made it into the top 10.
