Boston's 'Cheers' Bar Set To Permanently Close This Month

It’s closing time, for the last time.

After two decades in business, the Cheers-inspired bar at Boston’s Faneuil Hall Marketplace is locking its doors for good. CEO Markus Ripperger confirmed the closure to CBS Boston on Tuesday (August 18), explaining that the decision was due in part to the landlord’s lack of assistance and the toll of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Cheers founder Tom Kershaw addressed the closure in a press statement, revealing that the iconic bar, a 2001-opened replica of the set for the beloved 1982 sitcom Cheers, will officially close on August 30.

“Cheers Replica Bar has had a wonderful 20 years in the iconic Faneuil Hall Marketplace, one of America’s most cherished historic landmarks,” he shared. “I have faced, and pulled through, many kinds of downturns and upticks in the economy within the last 20 years Cheers Replica Bar at Faneuil Hall Marketplace has been in business. Sadly, the COVID-19 pandemic, combined with no assistance from our landlord (Ashkenazy Acquisition Group), has made this current challenge insurmountable.”

Spawning stars like Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman, Kristie Alley, and Woody Harrelson, Cheers took home 28 of its 117 Emmy nominations before wrapping its eleventh season in 1993.
