Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby donated the car he won for being named MVP of the NHL All-Star Game this past January to a local veteran!
According to NHL.com, Madeline Malizio, has been an Army Specialist for the past five years. She is going to school at CCAC for legal studies, and is single mother to a 3-year-old son. She also didn't own a car, until Friday.
Malizio was one of 10 veterans invited to attend the team's practice on Friday. Crosby met her after practice, and then surprised her by giving her a brand new Honda Passport.
"He was telling me how he heard about my story and he wanted to do something to help my situation," she told members of the media. "I was confused. I wasn't sure what he could be talking about. He puts the garage up and it's this car."
NHL.com says that Malizio was fighting back tears, as her son, Maverick, was running around the car in excitement.
The Pens host the Blackhawks Saturday night (11/9) at PPG Paints Arena, and throughout the game there will be several special events to salute and honor veterans. Malizio and other vets are expected to attend.
